What are Tanning Books? Ideally set in summer, Tanning Books are stories dripping with sun drunk love and sex, descriptions of red wine soaked garden parties and salty ocean dips. They’re transportive worlds that take you beyond your faded swim towel, Maui Babe oil and plastic water bottle in tow, lathered and laying on a city rooftop or by the public pool or in a grassy park. Reading a Tanning Book feels like biting into a juicy peach, or taking a nap on the beach.
Crucially, however, these stories are haunting—it’s what makes them gripping to read, dripping with sweat as you turn the page. They’re stories of bad decisions made in the heat of the moment, with consequence that ripple through the mirage of blue sky days. They’re psychological portraits of people who push the boundaries of society, pressing against the netting of their lives until it breaks. They’re violent, thrilling mysteries, propelled by summer paranoia that colours lackadaisical afternoons with a sense of impending dread. These are stories of reckless restlessness, of affairs that sour like stone fruit left in the sun to rot. It’s too hot, it’s too much, you can’t get enough.
